Who's behind
the numbers

Street Smart Reports is written and run by Mark Baum — a quantitative researcher who builds rules-based models for determining the climate of markets, ranking sectors and stocks, and managing risk. To respect professional boundaries, I publish my work under the pseudonym "Mark Baum." Mark Baum is the fiercely cynical and truth-seeking hedge fund manager in Michael Lewis' book and movie "The Big Short." No hot takes. No hunches. Just the same calculation, run the same way, every single night.

01  ·  The Problem

Why this exists

Most market commentary is opinion dressed up as analysis — a take on the Fed, a hunch about earnings season, a chart with two lines drawn on it after the fact. None of it is falsifiable, and none of it is consistent.

Street Smart Reports was built to remove the guesswork. Three systematic models — Portfolio Navigator, Sector Navigator, and Stock Navigator — run automatically every night on breadth data, momentum, and fundamental quality scores. They don't have opinions about the Fed. They don't get nervous in a drawdown or euphoric in a rally. They follow rules.

02  ·  The Background

Two decades of building models

Before Street Smart Reports, Mark spent years building systematic trading and forecasting models — the kind used to manage real risk with real money, not the kind built for a backtest screenshot.

That experience shaped the core belief behind this publication: signals are only useful if they're transparent, repeatable, and built to survive contact with an actual market — not just a sales page.

What you can expect

PUBLISHING PRINCIPLES
  • No black box — every report publishes its methodology, signal history, and backtested performance, wins and losses both.
  • No noise trading — these models are built for long holding periods and low turnover. No new "opportunity" every other day.
  • No personalized advice — published for informational purposes only, under the publisher's exemption of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940.
